🦋 Monarchs: a THREATENED Species in the US?

in the midst of this holiday season, some alarming (and perhaps hopeful) news for the future of the monarch monarch butterfly…

Monarch to be listed as a THREATENED species in the US❓

There has been much discussion over the past decade whether or not to list monarch butterflies as a threatened (or even endangered) species.

Climate change, rampant pesticide use, and lost of habitat are all major factors in the disturbing decline of this beloved species. (Unfortunately, these factors are a clear and present danger to ALL beneficial pollinators and other garden wildlife.)

If the threatened designation passes, efforts would be made to decrease the loss of habitat (milkweed) that the monarch relies on for survival.

Home gardeners and butterfly enthusiasts would be limited to raising 250 monarchs per year for educational purposes, and that seems like a fair, if not overly large number….we set our limit at 100 monarchs over the entire season so we can focus on raising healthy butterflies.
